Each of the nine action ratings is divided between three saves - your base competency for reflexively responding to problems during those actions. When you assign your action ratings, you will also calculate each save’s rating. The first rank in each action applies to its associated save, but further ranks do not. Thus, a character with no ranks in Move, Fight ••, and Operate ••• would have a total Grit save of •• (two).
When you or one of your teammates fails an action, but before it generates any complications, you may declare that you are going to MAKE THE SAVE. When you do so, you still do not recover the effort you bet. Instead, return an amount of your current effort, up to the save rating of the failed action, to the bank. When the reveal is being narrated describe how you turned certain failure into a success, and a number of chips come off of the stakes equal to the amount of effort you chose to return to the bank. If a success on an action you saved would generate a complication, it does so normally.
