Depending on your game's setting, you may have the opportunity to play as a nonhuman character, such as an elf, dwarf, or angel. These characters are said to be of a fantastical lineage: a type of being native to or common within The Realm.
For the most part, playing a fantastical being simply provides more avenues for narration. A character of a lineage half as tall as a human could find more places to hide themselves, while a being able to detect things by scent could have more ways to express information they have gathered. Describe what makes your character different from a common human and discuss what opportunities that may present you during gameplay. You may also choose one of the Lineage Templates listed below. Each template has one or two examples from common fantasy tropes.
You are a being able to survive in both surface and aquatic environments. You may have fins, or your legs may magically become a tail when you begin to swim. You may swim confidently in the water at the same rate that a human can walk across solid ground and you are capable of stronger and tighter movement underwater. You may decide whether have gills which you must keep moist while on land, or if you can hold a large enough breath to remain submerged for hours on end. Examples: Mermaids, Frogfolk
You are not a living being, having been built instead of born. None of your limbs are vital. Instead, if you ever have three or more lost limbs you enter into a shutdown state. Restoring a lost limb to fresh on a constructed being in this state is a four chip project and requires tools appropriate to the material they are made from. Once all of the constructed being's limbs are restored from their lost state, they may be brought back online to be played. Examples: Golem, monster assembled from body parts
You are not of The Realm, having been sent from on high to guide and protect its people. A halo encircles your head and emits light as bright as a lantern all around you. You do not need to eat or sleep. Your Blood is not a vital limb, as the breath of life is enough to sustain you. Examples: Angels or Nephilim
You are able to easily detect the minds of creatures around you. By concentrating upon a single nearby mind, you can begin to interpret its surface thoughts. You can communicate directly to the minds of nearby friendly creatures. You may have some limited ability to manipulate nearby objects via telepathy, or to cause objects to burst into flames with pyrokinesis. Examples: Grey aliens, things with squids for heads.
You are a being for whom nature allows passage. You have much keener sight and hearing in natural places than humans do, and may even have some ability to track by scent within them. Tangled foliage and knee-deep water impose little interference to your movement through them, and you can stride across unpacked snow as easily as hard stone. Wild animals regard you with less fear than they do humans, and even apex predators think twice before attacking you. Examples: Elves, Dryads.
You are of physical proportions which would be impossible for a human to achieve. Such beings tower over their human neighbors and are capable to exerting the strength of a small team of laborers. You may be more resistant to small arms such as knives and thrown stones thanks to your impressive size. Examples: Giant, Orc.
You are of a species which spends most of its natural life underground, and have adaptations which make doing so as easy as living under the sky. You have the ability to see in the dark, usually in colorless black-and-white, but possibly as echolocation or heat detection. You have very stable footing on loose or wet surfaces. You are more keenly aware of unnatural stone formations, and can easily identify where such a feature has been recently disturbed. Examples: Dwarf, Gnome.
You are not alive, yet still you live. You may be an angry soul returned from the beyond, the slain victim of another undead, or the product of foul sorceries. Regardless, you no longer have any need to eat, drink, sleep, or breathe and your airways are no longer Vital. You do not need to sleep for any reason other than to pass the time, though you may be able to be knocked unconscious by an attack. You do not tire through exertion, but your hunger becomes more ravenous the longer you push yourself. Thanks to your lifeless state, mindless undead beings such as zombies may ignore you unless you preset yourself as a threat. Examples: Skeleton, Vampire.
You are a being from whom nature recoils in disgust. Plants wither in your presence and animals become agitated when you are near. Wrought metals and hard stone often crumble like chalk in your grasp. Machines designed by man falter as their oil fails to lubricate and their springs fail to sproing. Examples: Gremlin, Dullahan.
You have a pair of wings which are strong enough to keep you aloft. You may fly at the same speed as a human can walk across the ground, and can push yourself harder in the same manner as running. You can stop yourself during freefall, and can hover in place if you wish. You are able to maintain especially high speeds if you are able to glide a long distance, but such speeds prevent you from stopping quickly. Injuries to your Core Muscles affect your ability to fly. Examples: Angels, Birdfolk
